Letters, ca. 1879-1903.

Collection includes eight letters, two addressed to Leonce Benedite (ca. 1903), two to "mon cher maitre" (1883, 1893), and four to unknown correspondents, presumably critics. The letters to Benedite concern the reproduction of "Hommage to Delacroix" and other works, while the letters to critics are generally written in response to favorable reviews and publications. In one letter of 1879, Fantin-Latour describes himself as an enemy of all juries and expresses his disapproval of the involvement of the state in all artistic matters. There are two fragments of letters: the final page of a letter discussing literary interests, engraved reproductions of his work and favorable reviews in Belgian newspapers; and the description of a painting in progress entitled "Hommage a la Verite," with a small sketch of the picture. With three letters by Victorine Fantin-Latour to Mlle. Benedite apparently written during World War I. Also included is a photograph by Eugène Chéron of one of Fantin-Latour's paintings; autographed by Fantin-Latour.
